L-Tyrosine

The first dopamine supplement to try should almost certainly be l-tyrosine.
L-tyrosine is an amino acid that’s a precursor to dopamine.
Tyrosine is found mainly in protein-rich foods like animal products and legumes.
If you don’t get enough l-tyrosine in your diet, or your body doesn’t properly convert it, you won’t manufacture adequate dopamine.
There are several forms of tyrosine supplements available.

I prefer acetyl-l-tyrosine, a highly absorbable form that readily crosses the blood-brain barrier — a filter that keeps foreign substances out of the brain.

Mucuna Pruriens

Mucuna pruriens is a tropical legume that goes by many common names including velvet bean or cowhage.
The beans and pods contain l-dopa, a dopamine precursor.
Mucuna pruriens supplements are sold to enhance mood, memory, overall brain health, anti-aging, and libido.
Mucuma pruriens is sometimes used to treat Parkinson’s, a disease characterized by low dopamine.

In one study, this herb was found to work even better than levodopa medications for Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s patients are advised to not self-medicate with Mucuna pruriens since it interacts with many medications and can drive blood pressure too low.

SAM-e

SAM-e (s-adenosylmethionine) is a naturally occurring compound that’s commonly taken for depression.

It works by increasing dopamine, serotonin, and other “feel good” neurotransmitters.
Depression is usually thought of as being caused by low serotonin, but there’s a lot of evidence that points to low dopamine as a factor.
This is particularly true in people who are not helped by taking serotonin enhancing medications.

SAM-e works better for depression than St. Johns wort, another popular herb for depression.
It works as good as prescription antidepressants and it works faster, bringing relief usually within 4 days.
SAM-e is sold in the US as a supplement and in Europe as a prescription medication for depression.
It’s particularly helpful for the depression associated with Parkinson’s and schizophrenia.

SAM-e should not be mixed with levodopa, Demerol, or Ultram, or the over-the-counter cough remedy Robitussin DM.

DMAE

DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) is an organic compound that is naturally produced in the human brain as well as being found in food sources like fish (anchovies, salmon, and sardines).

As a nootropic, it is closely related to Choline but due to a slightly different chemical structure it crosses the blood-brain barrier much more easily.

Many individuals interested in boosting their brainpower will take DMAE instead of Choline Bitartrate because it provides a more noticeable increase in cognitive abilities. Nowadays, more people use Centrophenoxine which is an enhanced version of DMAE with similar effects but greater potency.
